General Overview

Still relatively new to the game, Cloudways is anything but a rookie when it comes to web hosting. Their platform was built to bring simplicity to the more advanced and complicated hosting platforms so users of all experience levels can utilize world-class hosting features for their apps and websites.

Cloudways is one of the few hosting companies that we’ve reviewed that ranks high on functionality as well as ranking high on affordability.

While Cloudways can host your WordPress site or E-Commerce install, the sky truly is the limit with all you can do on Cloudways. And because of all that functionality, Cloudways really is more than a host, but a PaaS (platform-as-a-service) provider.

About Cloudways

Cloudways was founded in 2009 and is presently headquartered on the small island of Malta, just off the coast of Italy but their presence is far from confined.

They also have offices in Spain and Dubai, and their platform sits on top of some of the most recognizable server providers in the world, giving them a datacenter footprint on 6 continents. So as long as your customers don’t primarily reside in Antartica, they have you covered.

  • Top-Tier Servers
  • Dedicated WordPress

  • Usage Monitoring

While Cloudways is technically a web hosting provider, we feel that category doesn’t quite capture all that Cloudways can provide.

Cloudways is better defined as a Platform-as-a-Service provider. Their new PaaS model provides access to world-class raw infrastructure, without the learning curve of having to know how to program a server from the command line.

All of the features Cloudways provides is what sets them apart from other hosts. Below are some of the most important features you’ll use with them.

Servers

At Cloudways you have the option of deploying your website from five of the webs top cloud hosting companies: Linode, DigitalOcean, Vultr, AWS, & Google Cloud Platform.

Piggy backing on the cloud hosting company’s presence allows you to build your website on every meaningful continent.

With DigitalOcean, Linode, & Vultr, you have the option of selecting from preconfigured server sizes. These sizes allow you to select purely dedicated storage, ram, bandwidth, and the # of cores. While this sounds cookie-cutter, there are plenty of options to choose from and you always have the option of choosing your servers physical location.

AWS and Google Cloud both are much more customizable in their bandwidth, storage, ram, and CPU options. These two providers also allow you to select and scale your specific database size allocation making them a great option for scaling your app on the fly.

Managed WordPress Hosting

Most people or companies choose to move to a dedicated WordPress host because of the speed and the support.

Because the Cloudways platform is only built on SSD servers, and you have fully dedicated resources, you can expect blazing page load times for your WordPress install. The speed doesn’t just work for small instances, Cloudways allows you to scale up (and down) as needed.

Cloudways Review - Managed WordPress
Managed WordPress Features

Their dedicated WordPress support team is equally as impressive as their speed. With features like, 24/7 support, frequent and automated backups, and free site migrations your site is in great hands.

WordPress Migrations

An important feature especially for those who are looking to migrate to Cloudways instead of starting from scratch is the WordPress migration tool. Typically, most hosts you have to go digging through old emails and find your FTP or SSH login credentials and send it to a team that will then get to it at their earliest convivence. But when you’re switching hosts, momentum is everything and Cloudways knows that

They built their proprietary WordPress migration plugin to alleviate all the headaches of moving a site. We were skeptical at first, but it worked like a charm.

Enterprise WordPress Hosting Package

Because of demand for these services Cloudways has rolled out Enterprise level WordPress hosting packages to compete with companies like Pagely, Kinsta, & Automattic.

Cloudways Review - Enterprise WordPress Management

This service isn’t something that you can select from the main admin configuration area, as this is more of a tailored solution reserved for very high demand WordPress sites.

Cloudways Review - Enterprise WordPress Management
Enterprise WordPress Management Features

Enterprise is exclusively built on the Google Cloud Platform to ensure stability and high-performance. A few of the features such as 24/7 priority support and cloud load balancing are exclusive to this level of hosting but have a feeling (unconfirmed) that they will be available sooner rather than later to standard hosting plans.

Staging Area

Cloudways has added a staging area which allows you to fully test and implement changes on your site or application without ever touching your live install. Once you’re done with your changes you can push the updated changes live and your users won’t experience any downtime. The staging space does take space on your server instance, so you may need to a larger server instance to have both sites going while you make changes.

APPS

Coming from a shared web hosting environment, deploying an app may sounds daunting, but nothing is further from the truth. If you can install an app on your phone, you can deploy an app with Cloudways.

Cloudways Apps
Deploying an App is Simple

Deploying applications on your Cloudways server couldn’t be easier. You have the ability to install, WordPress, WordPress Multisite, PHP, Laravel, Magento, Drupal, OpenCart, PrestaShop, and Joomla.

When you select WordPress or WordPress Multisite from the dropdown those are actually Cloudways enhanced installs of WordPress that include a more efficient install of WordPress that include Cloudways’ proprietary caching plugin, Breeze.

Is Cloudways a good host to launch your E-Commerce business?

At first glance you might think Cloudways is more suited for blogs and WordPress type sites and not a good spot to host your E-Commerce business, but you’d be wrong.

Cloudways’ platform takes away the complexities of launching your own site. All you have to do is select from the list of apps and your site is live and within a few minutes your site is ready to go live and take orders.

Currently you have the option of launching Magento, WooCommerce, and Prestashop e-commerce platforms.

Cloudways E-Commerce Options
Cloudways E-Commerce Options

A big benefit of hosting your e-commerce store with Cloudways vs. a shared host is the ability to scale rapidly.

Someone shares your store on Reddit and you get a flood of traffic? That’s no problem for the scalability you can achieve with a hosting plan from Cloudways.

CDN

Cloudways’ CDN is an excellent addon, and a must-have feature for a lot of website owners especially if you serve, or hope to serve, a global audience.

Cloudways CDN Features
Cloudways CDN

If you’ve implemented a CDN previously you know that tweaking the settings is time consuming. Cloudways CDN takes all the headaches out of deploying your content all over the world. It’s especially easy to implement if you’re going to be using WordPress as it works perfectly in conjunction with their caching plugin, Breeze.

Cloudways CDN Pricing
Cloudways CDN Pricing

When we tested it on one of our static styling options or pictures disappeared, the whole site just simply loads faster.

Pricing on their CDN is fair, starting at $1 per 25GB of bandwidth transfer.

Their CDN Service is built upon the Stackpath network (formerly MaxCDN). Currently the Stackpath has 45 edge locations that will distribute your static content too. Another benefit of turning on the Cloudways CDN is you have automatic access to anti-DDoS capabilities.

Cloudways CDN Countries
Stackpath PoP Locations

It should be noted that currently the Cloudways CDN does not work with WordPress Multisite Installs. This feature has been asked for in their forums since 2017, but there have been no updates to that.

Auto-Healing

Cloudways has auto-healing functionality built into their system. If something were to go wrong with a server, most of the issues are repaired automatically so you’re not caught off guard with prolonged downtime.

SSL Certificates

SSL’s aren’t just for transaction protection anymore. If you’re running a website today they’re now a must (not to mention a Google ranking indicator).

Cloudways SSL Cert
Let's Encrypt Option

A modern website needs modern security. Having an SSL certificate is now considered a basic requirement of hosting a website.

You can easily install your own SSL Cert to protect your server, but don’t feel like paying extra money? You’re in luck.

Cloudways has become a Let’s Encrypt provider allowing you to implement their free standard and wildcard SSL certificates on every single one of your apps. Have 100 apps? You can have 100 free SSL certs.

Backup & Restore

It’s been said that those that fail to plan, plan to fail. Nothing could be truer when it comes to web hosting. Backups at Cloudways happen at the server level, not yet at the application level. You have the option of choosing a backup frequency of every hour to every 7 days. Backups are setup to happen every 24 hours by default.

Cloudways Backup Options
Cloudways Backup Options

You’ll also have the ability to choose how long you’d like to keep each backup from 1-4 Weeks. Another Backup feature that you can implement through Cloudways is enabling local backups. This makes it easy for users who want direct access to the files via SSH/SFTP. Cloudways offers an open API for developers to control all these settings from their own apps.

Cloudways Bot

You’re able to change the notification settings and stay alerted to virtually everything going with your server setup with the CloudwaysBot. You can select how you want to be notified via the bot via Slack, email, or you can write a custom API script and integrate the updates in your own application.

Optional Addons

DNSMade Easy – Pricing starts at $2.50 a month for the first 5 domains using DNSMadeEasy. This is a great option if you want to fully ensure your site can always be reached.

Rackspace Email – This isn’t an instant provision setup like most of Cloudways however when testing the support team had it setup in under an hour. It may vary based on the time of day you request it.

Elastic Mail – A scalable email service that will allow your organization to start at a much lower cost and increase price per the number of email messages you send and receive.

Speed & Uptime

  • Only SSD Servers
  • Very Fast Load Times
  • Easily Handles Loads
  • Built-In Caching

At the end of the day, the majority of business owners just want one thing, speed. How fast your website loads is a huge signal to your customers as well as Google that you mean business. We were very impressed with the results.

Cloudways value proposition is the ability to deploy servers virtually anywhere in the world. Between the 5 providers the platform is built on, there are 59 locations spread across every continent. And these aren’t old, out-dated severs, these providers host some of the biggest companies’ mission critical data.

All the servers in the Cloudways pool feature SSD drives standard. SSD’s are up to 300% faster than standard hard drives which helps tremendously with load times.

Cloudways Stack (VMAN) – Cloudways provides an optimized VMAN server stack (Varnish, Memecached, Apache, & NGINX) This is a winning combination which allows users to experience faster loading times right out of the box without much configuration.

PHP7 – All the servers in the Cloudways pool are PHP 7 ready. PHP is significantly faster than its predecessors.

HTTP/2 – Cloudways servers utilize HTTP/2 which at a high level decreases the delay in communication between the server itself and clients accessing it.

WordPress Cache Plugin – Breeze by Cloudways is their in-house developed plugin. Not as complicated to setup as other WordPress caching plugins.

How We Tested Cloudways

Because there are so many datacenters that you can build your website on, there can be so many variables in response time such as physical location, time of day, operating system, browser version, etc.

The way we tested the speed and response times of the servers was to install the basic WordPress install onto each one of the cloud providers datacenters and test from multiple locations across the globe. Every install included the activation of the Cloudways CDN so the static content was replicated across the globe.

If you’re a local business, it’s obviously best always best to pick the datacenter closest to your clients because we still live in a world controlled by the laws of physics and time.
If your clients are worldwide, then it’s probably good to consider a CDN as the files will be hosted locally for thus decreasing speed times. We tested the response times with the CDN installed to give a more accurate reading of response time.

All our WordPress installs were deployed on the smallest package available to give you an idea of what you can expect with the minimal resources from each host.

Overall the fastest average first visits world wide came from AWS, with the overall fastest times in North America coming from Google Cloud. While raw speed is a great indicator of server performance, there are so many factors that can go into how your individual website performs.

What is impressive to see is the response time decrease between the second and first visit indiciating that caching was happening at the application, server, as well as the CDN.

As you see in the results above, there really isn’t a bad choice when it comes to choosing the provider to deploy your website on, in the grand scheme of comparing hosts, all of these providers are in the top percentile.

(we know that while speed is one of the most important aspect of choosing a host, but we also take a look at how the speeds correlate to the cost of the server in our Pricing section)

Usability (Ease of Use)

  • One Centralized Dashboard
  • 1-Click Deploy
  • Easily Add On Features
  • Full Control

For the amount of complexity associated with what Cloudways does, their control panel is extremely simple to use. Upon login you’re greeted with a familiar message telling you to have a great day at work!

Cloudways Login Screen

Deploying Apps & Servers

Starting up your own virtual server and application may sound overwhelming, but it’s super easy. Simply click on the “+ Add Server” button in the dashboard area and begin the process. You have the option of selecting an app from the dropdown menu of preconfigured apps.

Installing WordPress

Cloudways comes preconfigured with 4 different installs of WordPress.

  • The Latest Version (with Cloudways Configuration and Breeze)
  • The Latest Version with WooCommerce Built In
  • WordPress Multisite
  • Clean (Standard WordPress, No Cloudways Config or Addons)

All are just a dropdown menu selection away and installs onto the server and fully sets it up complete with login credentials. This is a nice change if you’re used to hosting directly with DigitalOcean which requires you to login at the server and finish the WordPress application configuration from there.

Selecting the Server

Once you select the application you want to install comes the fun part of picking exactly where you want the files to be stored. At the time of writing you have the option of over 59 locations across the globe. It makes sense to pick a datacenter closest to where your customers reside.

Cloudways Console

There are two main dashboards on the Cloudways backend that allow you to control virtually everything about your website. They are the server and application dashboard.

At login, your main dashboard page will show a list of all your active servers. Users have the ability to toggle between the server view or the application view using the switch on at the top left. Clicking on the server will bring up the list of all the active applications arranged by the domains associated with them.

Server Dashboard

Cloudways Server Management
Cloudways Server Management

Master Credentials – This shows your public IP Address along with your SSH access area.

Monitoring – The monitoring tab allows users to have a full snapshot of the RAM, CPU, and Disk Usage all their applications are using on their server space.

Manage Services – This is where you have the ability to change the settings of Apache, Memecached, MySQL, NewRelic, NGINX, PHP, and Varnish. Some WordPress apps require different settings to these features and Cloudways allows you to toggle their settings vs having to open a support ticket like most hosts.

Settings & Packages – This is a really handy feature much like the manage services section in that you have full control over the limits your applications and plugins run.

Security – This is discussed in more detail below but will allow you to whitelist IP addresses and configure MySQL and the SSH settings of your server.

Vertical Scaling – When your website begins to increase in popularity chances are you may get close to your resource limits set forth by your server size. A lot of cloud providers require you to be able to resize your server from the command line, however with Cloudways, it’s just a simple drag of the arrow to change your servers size. This also works both ways, if you don’t quite need all the space you thought, you can slim down and save on your monthly bill as well.

Backups – You can control the backup frequency your server takes snapshots of all your sites.

Application Dashboard

Cloudways App Dashboard
Cloudways App Dashboard

Access Details Page – shows the main login info for the app, as well as the database credentials and SFTP info. We like how quickly you can add and/or edit users for all of them.

Disk Usage – Is a snapshot of the Applications usage broken down between the files as well as the database and provides tips on how to clean both to increase performance.

Domain Management – This is where you set the domain name to be associated with the application. The process is a little different than most but super easy. Cloudways allows you to easily add as many subdomains (name.yourdomain.com) as you want.

SSL Certificates – Where you can install your existing SSL or have Cloudways provide you with a free Let’s Encrypt SSL to protect your site.

Restore – Where you can select a previous version of your application to bring back to life.

Deployment Via Git – this allows you to deploy your Git applications seamlessly to your Cloudways server. A bit more advanced for most reading this, but a great feature to have for certain.

Cloudways CDN – Simple command area to turn on the CloudwaysCDN

Projects

A great feature Cloudways has on their backend is the ability to categorize your server and/or your applications under different project names. This is especially handy for developers who have multiple client projects going at the same time and allows for them to sort and filter by what they need to be looking at. It’s also great if you run multiple websites.

  • High Bandwidth Limits

Cloudways differs from most web hosting providers in that their billing is Pay as you Go. This can be confusing to those coming from establish hosting providers like Bluehost, HostGator and the like, but essentially it means is that you don’t have to pay for space you don’t need.

Most compute providers breakdown their pricing by the hour, and Cloudways is no different. This is especially beneficial to those who are experimenting with an app idea, but don’t have a lot of budget runway.

For example, you have a new project you’re trying to get off the ground and then you get too busy to work on it for a while, just backup all the files and close the sever and that stops the billing. No more monthly reoccurring bills for space on a server you’re not using.

Cloudways By The Hour
Digital Ocean By The Hour

Another difference you’ll probably notice is that Cloudways doesn’t bill upfront. All your computing charges are accrued during the month and then you’re charged at the end, making this really a try-before-you buy provider. Technically you’re billed on a per-hour rate, but it works out to be comparable to other hosting companies.

Cloudways doesn’t put a limit on the number of websites (applications) you can run on a server. If it fits it hosts! This makes them a great option for agencies, or just webmasters who run multiple websites. The savings on your hosting bill moving from a traditional host will add up very quickly.

Users or agencies run and manage multiple sites will quickly realize great savings over hosts that bill based on the # of sites.

You may be thinking; well why don’t I just host directly with AWS or DigitalOcean? It’s Cheaper! Yes, the space and bandwidth that you can get directly through one of these cloud providers is less expensive, but you’re not comparing apples-to-apples.

Digital Ocean (Direct)

Digital Ocean (Thru Cloudways)

  • 25 GB Storage
  • 1TB Transfer
  • 1 Core Proc.

Above we see that at the time of writing this Cloudways is $10 and for the same computing instance directly through DigitalOcean is $5. So what gives?

Well you’ll find if you decide to go the route of using DigitalOcean directly in this instance that you still have to login directly to finish the installation of your WordPress install, and most users won’t know how to do that.

Another thing to consider is what happens when something goes wrong with your application when it’s installed on one of the cloud providers? We’ll go ahead and let you know, you’re on your own.

So, the “premium” you pay we feel really isn’t a premium when you consider all the features you get, as well as having the peace of mind that there is someone there to answer your questions.

Security

  • Dedicated Firewalls
  • Free SSL
  • Regular Patching
  • Team Member Restrictions

Security is sometimes overshadowed by the sites features and just something that is assumed. But security is more than just having a password with a fancy character in it.

As your website grows in size and popularity, the last thing you want is to be hacked, or service interrupted because your host didn’t take it seriously.

Dedicated Firewalls – All the Servers at Cloudways are protected by a Firewall at the O/S level that automatically filter out malicious traffic from getting in.

1-Click SSL – Cloudways has partnered with let’s encrypt to offer their Free SSL certificate as well as Wildcard certificates so every section of your website is encrypted.

Regular Patching – Cloudways automatically updates firmware and operating systems as new updates are released so you don’t have to even think about that. These updates usually contain patches for vulnerabilities found in older versions, so your site isn’t a sitting duck for hackers.

Two Factor Authentication – TFA is an optional feature you can incorporate into your security plan.

Team Member Roles – The ability to assign roles and restrictions at the user level makes it a safer environment all around. Whether you’re just handing login credentials to a partner or temporary power to a Fiverr freelancer, it’s wise that you don’t have to hand out your admin login to everybody.

IP Whitelisting – IP Whitelisting makes it easy to setup restricted/unrestricted access to your sites. Only allow who you want, how you want.

  • Knowledge Base
  • Live Chat Support
  • Ticket Support
  • Active Community

When it comes to owning and operating your own website, sometimes you just need some help. As with all technologies, things will just sometimes go wrong and the last thing you want is to have to deal with unresponsive or unhelpful support agents.

Every web host that we’ve reviewed has some kind of hosting support, but not all support teams were created equal. The real value-add of Cloudways vs. just using the infrastructure providers directly is the ability to get more than just server level support.

Cloudways offers a Knowledge Base, Live Chat, Ticket Requests, & Community Forums. All are only a click away in the admin dashboard area.

Cloudways Knowledgebase
Cloudways Knowledgebase

Their knowledge base and community forums are fairly robust, and we’ve had some initial questions regarding some setup features, and every single one of them was in the Knowledgebase.

We haven’t had any real reason to ask for live support because Cloudways has been so user friendly, but the few times we’ve just wanted to chat with a real person the initial response times have been less than a minute, and gotten us fully resolved in under 5.

Overall their support is very impressive and we feel comfortable making the recommendation to host your live site on their platform knowing that if it breaks, someone will fix it…and fix it fast.

If you manage an already popular website or application and don’t feel that the standard support through Cloudways is enough, you have the option of upgrading to either their advanced or premier support.

Cloudways Priority Support
Cloudways Priority Support

Upgrading to Advanced Support – This upgrade costs $100 or 10% of your monthly server bill (whichever is higher) and improves your SLA on the ticketing and chat. This tier also provides application and customization support. Meaning they will help sort out issues that arise inside your application as well as help customize a server package that fits your specific needs.

Upgrading to Premier Support – This upgrade gets you all the features of the above Advanced support but also gets you an even more improved SLA response time. This comes at a much higher premium, however if you’re running a hugely popular site, this is a no-brainer add-on for peace of mind.

Q: Does Cloudways help with Site Migrations?
A: Yes, if you’re transferring your site over, they have a migration team that can help make sure everything transitions smoothly, and also have a WordPress plugin that will handle the migration seamlessly, so you have zero downtime. All of this is free to users.

Q: Does Cloudways Support cPanel?
A: No, Cloudways doesn’t use the universally known cPanel for their backend management, however the power of Cloudway’s backend management allows you to manage everything you can reasonably need at the server and application level.

Q: Does Cloudways Have Managed WordPress?
A: Yes, Cloudways has WordPress managed hosting capabilities and the speeds are as fast or faster than anything you’ll find at other managed WordPress hosting companies.

Q: Can you manage your email through Cloudways?
A: Yes, however it’s built on the Rackspace mail system. Pricing starts at $1 per month.

Q: Do I have to know some code or command line to run my server?
A: Nope! Cloudways takes all the complications out of cloud hosting. While knowing some code can be helpful, it’s definitely not necessary to get the benefits of Cloudways.

Q: Does Cloudways Accept Crypto?
A: No, not as of yet. They do accept all major credit cards as well as PayPal.

Conclusion

Cloudways is one of the few hosting companies that we’ve reviewed that the benefits outweigh the monthly cost. When it comes to cloud-based hosting, they’re one of, if not, the best. Their access to some of the world’s best infrastructure partners makes them an extremely competitive. If you’re still on the fence about using Cloudways, they offer a 30-day money back guarantee so you can test it out immediately and see if it’s a match.
